There are singer/songwriters and there are wordsmiths. It's a fine distinction between the two, particularly when the tracks are recorded with just voice and guitar. For me Mark Roberts falls into the latter category. It's the words and narrative that drive his songs forward. Yes he can play guitar, very well as the instrumental "He Fell Asleep" proves, but predominently the music provides accompaniment to the lyric, rather than as an equal part. It's an approach that works well, it gives a mellow and reflective edge to the work and helps give the album a distinct feel. Definitely worth a listen.

- ~Note from Mark~ After a prolonged period trying,
I have given up and stopped growing my hair. Although
I may sound like a folky, I have become resigned to
the fact I will never look like one. However, in an
attempt to look more indie I have bought one of those
black corduroy jackets with the hood and the novelty
badges. And a big scarf.

"We thought we were having a great evening and then on came
Mark Roberts. This guy is sublime. Laid back, intricate,
often quiet, you could hear a pin drop as he played."
